Kuching, Sarawak’s riverside capital, is Borneo made easy, a laid-back foodie city within reach of rainforest, orangutans and longhouse culture. It’s one of Malaysia’s most underrated breaks. The best time to go
March to September is the drier window and best for the parks; the monsoon peaks November to February. Public holidays push both the crowds and the prices up — dodge them if you can.
Booking your flights
Kuching International (KCH) takes direct flights from Peninsular Malaysia and regional hubs, with the short hop from KL among the cheaper legs. The airport is close to the city. The city centre is walkable, and ride-hailing is cheap for the parks and further sights. Small boats still ferry across the river for a few coins. Working out the transport early pays for itself over a few days.

Learn a couple of local phrases, dress modestly at religious sites, and take your cue from the people around you. Small gestures make Kuching friendlier and smooth over the little moments.
Leave room to wander
Resist the urge to over-schedule. The best memories of Kuching are usually the unplanned ones, so leave gaps for a long lunch, a wrong turn, or an afternoon that happily runs late.
